It’s a small poster I've done for a historical fiction, adapted from the famous Chinese literary classic, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” The story of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is now very popular in the form of PC games in Japan, China and Taiwan. The background of the story is set in ancient China, about one thousand and eight hundred years ago. The hero of this adapted fiction is not the emperors, but one of the famous generals of Shu Kingdom, Chao Yu (Zhao Yun). Chao is well-known as a great general for his bravery and loyalty in that period of history.

In order to show the atmosphere of that turbulent time, I apply red and yellow to be the main color tone, which can express the boldness and ambitions of these heroes, also the war-stricken time as well. Chao Yun is a young hero full of confidence and energy. As for the famous emperors of three kingdoms, they all have distinctive individual characteristics. Diao Chan, the beautiful spy, looks determined and indifferent.

This piece of work took me almost 18 hours, from drafting, coloring the first layer with acrylic pigment, to coloring characters and fine tuning details in Photoshop.
