his is King Zotz, mayan king of the bat people. This Mayan King was created in 3DS Max, not Maya, over the period of 2 months in my free time. I collected several books on Mayan art, and culture for research and bought a number of stones to scan for textures, namely jade, turquoise and chrysoprase. It was inspired partly by the film Apocalypto, but also in my keen interest in going to south and central America. The face is invented from referring to 3 or 4 images I could find of Amazonian natives.
The Headdress is also invented, but there is much reference to Mayan art depicting headdresses. The feathers are from the much coveted quetzal bird, and the hair is intended to be from sacrificial victims. The smoke is from the burning hearts of the sacrificial victims.
I spent an afternoon finishing the image off in Photoshop, just cleaning up a few UV mapping glitches and burning in some shadows, also colour balance, grain and depth blur, and clearly I placed the sky background and smoke in photoshop too.
