This is one of a series of 3 images created for a US ad campaign for Tide Ultra 2X detergent. The ads won the Grand Prix in the Press category at Cannes Advertising Awards last year and a Gold Lion in the Outdoor category. Everything was created in-scene so there are approximately 3500 characters rendered in a single pass about 6000px wide (proxies were used to help speed things up). It was a mammoth job as you can imagine. The most difficult aspect was to get the really tight packing but still maintaining randomness - this is a lot harder to do than it sounds, though there are still some intersections if you look for them. Characters were rigged and animated into different poses and by randomizing the timing I was able to simulate a random distribution of poses more or less procedurally. This was all done using Cinema 4D and the MoGraph module. I tried using Maya and XSI first but it was a nightmare. Some of you may have already seen this image before so sorry if its old news! Unfortunately due to the file size restrictions I have to use high JPEG compression so its a bit grungy. I'll post some closeups if it makes it to the gallery.
