This was my entry for the Strange Behaviour challenge.
An 18th century man who is a follower of the 'science' of physiognomy readies himself to cut off his nose to spite his own face. The chair he sits in is a physiognomy chair, used to draw profile silhouettes from which a person's character was determined. The profile of this man shows that he is choleric (given to impetuous and willful outbursts) and he is cutting off his nose to cure himself of this unwanted disposition.
I wanted to do a sort of 18th century portrait in deep shadow to accentuate the lonely, inward-looking and self-indulgent nature of his obsessions.
