"Group of Strangers entering the Marketplace".

I started this picture with the idea of doing a tall but non-natural structure, a kind of large arena which could give impression of greatness. The Marketplace idea came a bit later.

For the work process, I began to sketch the general arena shape in black & white . Because of the surrounding walls (they limit the way to light the scene), I decided to define very early the main light direction and basic shadow areas.

I then applied 'color balance' layers (mainly one for shadow areas, one for sun exposed areas) to give the scene the basic mood it needed. It was a good starting point to continue the work directly in color.
