I wanted to try an exaggerated character design/painting. At first this was intended to be a sort of giant stone monument, a la Easter Island heads. After working with it for a while, I got interested in giving it more true to life skin tones, and so it became more of a living creature. I added the sword for composition, which was taken from another illustration.
