In the late 1930's, many able-bodied Germans were taken (willingly or otherwise) from their chosen professions to support the build-up of forces leading to what would later be known as World War II. Musicians were no exception to this, resulting in a shortage of talent to play in the popular jazz cabarets, especially in and around Berlin.
